There’s a story that early in the early 1900s a young man approached an industrialist with a secret for vastly improving his time management and personal productivity. The young man offered the industrialist a deal: he would share the secret, and if was useful, the industrialist would pay him $10,000. They shook hands.
“To be more effective, you simply need to remember this,” said the young man. “Each night before you go to bed, make a list of the top three things you have to accomplish tomorrow in order to consider that your day has been a success.”
The young man continued, “On the top of your list – with no more than three things to do – will be that one thing that only you can do that will have the greatest impact on your organization. If you do this, you will see that your days will be more successful, and you will accomplish more in less time.”
The story goes that on hearing this, the industrialist immediately paid the young man the money.
While it may or may not have happened exactly this way, the advice echoes what time management experts tell us are 3 of the best ways to manage your time:
1. Plan your day the night before
2. Choose no more than three priority tasks for your to-do list
3. Put at the top of your list the one action that ONLY YOU CAN DO that will have the greatest impact on your organization
As someone with a lot of energy that I often need to point in the right direction, this last one resonates for me.
